Air speed control setup
As described in ‘Building manual – breathing resistance setup’, a breathing resistance setup should be built. However, it should be altered by adding a potentiometer and screen to allow the user to change the volume flow. The potentiometer setting tells the Arduino to change the PWM to the blower which changes the volume flow. The resulting flow and PWM setting is displayed on the screen.
The setup for this is dependent on the used hardware and only requires the addition of a pot and screen on the breathing resistance test. Hence will not be discussed in detail here. However, the Arduino code with explanation is included in the downloads. We have used a 16×2 LCD screen setup successfully, which is described in the following web page:

Building steps
Step 1
Make base plate 800 x 400 mm out of suitable material (aluminum, wood, plastic)
Step 2
Attach M6 threads to base plate in specified locations (see CAD-files)

Step 3
Attach 125 and 134 mm clamps using the M6 nuts at specified height (see CAD-files)

Step 4
Attach 125 mm PVC pipe, flange, and 134 mm Plexiglass tube to clamps
Use PVC-tape to guarantee airtight seal between flange and tubes

Step 5
Connect PVC 90° bend and second PVC 125 mm pipe, rubber seal is present in PVC bend so PVC tape not needed

Step 6
Connect mask clamp assembly (see CAD-files) to plexiglass tube, use PVC tape to guarantee airtight seal

Step 7
Connect 32mm PVC tubing to mask clamp assembly

Step 8
Attach Air hose connectors to plexiglass tube, and to PVC 125 mm tubes. Use silicone sealant to guarantee airtight seal

Connecting to peripherals

- Connect to output of particle generator
- Connect to ambient air tube of particle counter
- Connect to test tube of particle counter
- Connect to air control setup
